Be a Problem Solver

1.  Understand the Problem :

Retell the problem in your own words.

List the information given.

Ask, “What am I asked to find?”

2.  Plan : Choose a strategy.

Act it out

Use objects

Guess and check

Make a table or graph

Write an equation

Draw a diagram

Work backwards

Make a list

Find a pattern

3.  Solve the problem.

4.  Look Back :   Ask, “Is my answer reasonable?”

Lifesavers were first produced in 1912 by Clarence Crane, a manufacturer of chocolates. The first Life Saver was peppermint.  Today, the most popular roll of Life Savers is the assorted roll.  In a roll, there are 2 orange, 2 yellow, 2 white, 2 green, and 3 red candies.  And the colors are always in the same order.  Read the clues below and choose a strategy to answer the question.

a.  Yellow is always the first color and orange is always the last color.

b.  Red is second and second to last.

c.  Orange is third.

d.  Yellow is seventh.

e.  White is always between green and red.

f.  Yellow always borders red.

What color is in the middle of the roll???
